Privacy Policy
Last updated: 1 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information Spirits iQ collects through this website and the Spirits iQ app, why we collect it, who can see it and what rights you have.
Who we are
Spirits iQ is run by Spirits iQ Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17117682). We are the data controller for the information described here. You can contact us about anything in this policy at hello@spiritsiq.org.
This website
This site does not use cookies, analytics or tracking. If you email us, we keep your email address and what you wrote so we can reply. We don't add you to a mailing list unless you ask us to.
What the app collects when you sign up
We keep sign-up as short as we can. We ask for:
- Your sign-in details. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the name and email address they share with us. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we only see the private relay address Apple gives us. If you sign up with an email address, we store that address and a securely encrypted password.
- Confirmation that you are 18 or over. Spirits iQ teaches about alcohol, so it is only for adults.
- Your agreement to our terms and this policy.
- Whether you want to hear from us. This is optional and switched off unless you turn it on.
What you can choose to tell us later
Once you're in, the app may ask for a few more things. All of them are optional.
- Your role, chosen from a list (for example bartender, bar manager or student).
- Your city, so we can show how you rank against other people in your city, country and the world. We only ever ask for a city, never your precise location.
- A display name and avatar.
- Permission to send notifications, such as reminders to keep your streak going. You can turn these off in your phone's settings.
What the app records as you use it
- Your learning progress: lessons completed, answers, scores, streaks and levels.
- A short placement quiz result, which we use to set the difficulty of your lessons.
- Basic technical information, such as your device type and app version, so we can fix problems.
We don't ask about your own drinking habits and we don't collect health information.
Why we use it, and our legal basis
- To run the app for you: your account, saving progress, scheduling reviews and setting difficulty. Our legal basis is that this is necessary to provide the service you signed up for.
- To improve the course, for example spotting questions that most people get wrong. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in making the course better, and we use the minimum data needed.
- To send you news and offers, only if you've opted in. Our legal basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in the app or by emailing us.
Who can see your information
Other users.
Your display name and score may appear on leaderboards, including to colleagues at the same venue. City, country and global rankings only show percentiles. Where a city has too few users to keep people anonymous, it is grouped into the country figures.
Brand partners.
Some lessons are supported by spirits brands. We may share figures with them about how their content performs, but only as totals across many users, for example how many people completed a lesson or how results break down by role. We never share your name, email or individual answers, and we never sell your personal information.
Service providers.
We use a small number of companies to host the app, store data and run sign-in on our behalf. They may only use your data to provide their service to us, under contracts that require them to keep it secure. Some may process data outside the UK. Where they do, we rely on the safeguards UK data protection law requires.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is open. You can delete your account at any time from inside the app. When you do, we delete your personal information within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep something for longer. Totals that have already been shared with brand partners can't identify you and aren't affected.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the information we hold about you, correct it, download a copy, delete it, or object to or restrict how we use it. You can download or delete your data from within the app, or email hello@spiritsiq.org and we'll respond within one month.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Age
Spirits iQ is only for people aged 18 or over. If we learn that someone under 18 has created an account, we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use your information in a significant way, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
